About Richard Pestell
“Share hope. Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible—every day.” CEO and Founder -ProstaGene, StromaGenesis, EcoGenome, ioROC, Shenandoah Pharmaceuticals
Richard Pestell began his medical journey at the University of Western Australia, where he graduated at the top of his class and earned an M.B., B.S. His early clinical development included training as a physician at Royal Perth Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. This period provided extensive experience across Internal Medicine and residency, including oncology, endocrinology, hematology, cardiology, and transplant medicine, and it helped establish a strong clinical base for later research and leadership responsibilities.
His interest in cancer biology encouraged him to pursue advanced research training and to focus on how cancer-related mechanisms influence clinical outcomes, seeking insight into disease biology. He completed a Ph.D. at the University of Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute, specializing in the regulation of oncogene transcription. This research experience supported a long-term commitment to connecting rigorous science with practical medical goals.
Richard’s academic performance was recognized through national scholarships and multiple competitive fellowships, including a Winthrop Fellowship and an NHMRC postgraduate award. These achievements supported further development at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, where he trained as a clinical and research fellow. Through this work, he developed his ability to integrate patient-focused thinking with laboratory-based study.
Academic Leadership and Scientific Influence
Richard Pestell continued his academic career at Northwestern University and then at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he advanced to Professor, Chair of the Division of Endocrine-Dependent Tumor Biology, and Co-Director of major cancer research programs. To remain engaged in patient care and medical education, he also held positions at multiple hospitals in New York. These combined responsibilities supported a long-term focus on training, institutional leadership, and research translation.
During this period, his research helped lay the groundwork for cancer therapeutics. His research on cyclin D1 was cited in seminal publications underpinning CDK inhibitor clinical trials and their adoption as a standard therapy for breast cancer globally. He remained focused on contributing careful science that could support clinical decisions and expand treatment options over time.
His work on CCR5 also provided a scientific context for current oncology clinical trials involving CCR5 inhibitors. Throughout his career, he has published over 700 works, received more than 110,000 citations, achieved an h-index of 162, and delivered numerous invited lectures worldwide. These metrics reflect long-term research output and sustained engagement with the global cancer research community.
Directing Major Cancer Centers
Richard Pestell became the Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University in 2002. At Georgetown University Medical Center, he also served as Chair of the Department of Oncology and Associate Vice President. In these roles, he was responsible for research direction, clinical operations, and faculty development, and he contributed to institutional restructuring and growth within the cancer center environment.
While at Georgetown, he worked to build community partnerships, enhance research programs, and expand clinical services across Georgetown and MedStar systems. These efforts required coordination across clinical, research, and administrative teams, with attention to sustainable progress and strong operational foundations.
Richard assumed additional leadership roles in 2005 as the Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, Chair of the Department of Cancer Biology, and head of the Oncology Service Line at Thomas Jefferson University. In these roles, he supported both the scientific mission and clinical service development, working across programs that required alignment among research infrastructure, clinical delivery, and team leadership.
He later became the Executive Vice President, charged with enterprise-wide strategic decisions across a system of 30,000 employees. At Jefferson, he directed an overall cancer enterprise with an annual budget of >$350m and led transformational efforts in clinical care, research infrastructure, regional expansion, and team building. During his tenure, the cancer center rose from 64 to 17, reflecting structured improvement across multiple parts of the cancer enterprise.
Academic Appointments and Global Engagement
Richard Pestell has held leadership roles in academia outside of the US and has supported initiatives that connect research, education, and global outreach. He was a founding Director of the Delaware Valley Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, helped develop new education pathways for historically black colleges, and led global cancer outreach at the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research. These roles reflect continued attention to building systems that support training and international collaboration.
He has served on faculty or advisory boards with the University of Melbourne, the University of Western Australia, Nanyang Technological University, Xavier University School of Medicine, Kazan Federal University, and several European institutions. Through these affiliations, he has supported academic collaboration, program development, and ongoing engagement across diverse education and research settings.
Richard has also served with prominent scientific bodies that reflect the global reach of his work. He has served at the Academia Europaea, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Royal Society of Biology, among others. His awards included the RD Wright Medallion and the Eric Susman Prize in Medicine, culminating in his being made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2019.
Building Companies and Advancing Innovation
Richard Pestell has a long history of entrepreneurship alongside academic leadership. He is the founder of six biotechnology companies: LightSeed, ProstaGene (acquired in 2018), EcoGenome, StromaGenesis, ioROC, and Shenandoah Pharmaceuticals. Across these ventures, he has raised nearly 50 million dollars from investors, along with more than 80 million dollars as a principal investigator on NIH research grants, reflecting long-term effort in both private and public research support.
His patent portfolio has included discoveries in molecular diagnostics, cancer prognostics, therapeutic methods, and novel technologies that have impacted academic and commercial drug discovery and development. He has also served in advisory capacities for organizations such as the National Academy of Inventors, CytoDyn, Novartis, Deloitte, and numerous health technology companies. In these roles, he has focused on applying research toward practical development and real-world use.
Philanthropy, Community Service, and Cultural Engagement
Richard Pestell has approached philanthropy and community service as essential to leadership in cancer care. At Georgetown and Jefferson, he led philanthropic efforts that produced transformational gifts and supported new approaches to sustain ongoing fundraising for cancer care, wellness centers, and community outreach initiatives. These efforts strengthened resources for patient support and community-based oncology programs.
He has also served on different boards, including the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Historic St. Peter’s Church Preservation Corporation, the American Cancer Society committees, and several university societies. Through these commitments, he has supported cultural institutions, civic organizations, and public health-oriented initiatives.
Richard also supported the Olivia Newton-John Wellness Center through a fundraising trek on The Great Wall. This effort connected personal participation with fundraising goals and reinforced the importance of community-backed wellness initiatives in cancer care and patient support.
A Continuing Commitment to Science and Human Health
Richard Pestell now serves as President of the Pennsylvania Cancer and Regenerative Medicine Center, Blumberg Distinguished Professor of Translational Medical Research at the Baruch Blumberg Institute, and a member of the Wistar Institute Cancer Center. He continues to support global cancer programs, mentor scientific leaders, and develop technologies to improve diagnostics and treatment, while maintaining a focus on research translation and patient-centered outcomes.
He continues to apply scientific insight with a practical approach to enhance the quality of patient care and institutions, and to broaden the reach of modern oncology. Richard’s work continues to influence cancer research, medical education, and biotechnology on a global scale through ongoing leadership, research, and a continued commitment to better health outcomes.
